Back in the days when I worked in the City everyone would dread the day when the headshot photographer would come to town. We’d be summoned, like naughty children to the headmaster’s office, to a meeting room and asked to awkwardly stand in a spot surrounded by an array of lights, reflectors and umbrellas.
Suffice to say that in amongst the forced smiles and painful expressions there was only ever one picture from a single session I liked and I remember what made it work – the photographer was a human being and actually engaged with me.
When Emre asked if I could get some simple headshots on a plain backdrop at his home the only real question was whether he had a clean white wall sufficiently near a large window. We spent 5 minutes looking at and talking through some examples of headshots he liked. Without the burden of an immoveable studio lighting set-up we could work through a variety of stances (I hate the word pose in the context of a head shoot) and looks that conveyed different elements of his personality.
We then finished the session with a bit of fun involving some kitchen implements.
